Water Treatment Plant Operator - Level 1 FULL-TIME

Salary: Up to $20.20 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION. The Water Quality Supervisor is responsible for performing water testing and monitoring throughout all phases of the treatment process and into the distribution system to ensure water quality and compliance with all regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • On a prescribed basis, enters readings and other information relative to water pressure and number of gallons pumped from each location and forwards information to superiors.
  • Provides information to field service personnel necessary for them to perform their jobs effectively and efficiently.
  • Responds to telephone inquires from citizens and others with concerns about water service. Takes appropriate action to resolve concerns, which may include directing other to respond, directing the call to another agency or directing the call to a superior.
  • Totals and records the previous days precipitation amount and forwards to appropriate governmental agency for filing.
  • Conducts visual inspection of chemical feeding devices to assure that correct level of chemicals are being added to the water supply. Adjust rate of feed if necessary.
  • Receives shipments of products and stores correctly.
  • Moves 150 lb. Chlorine cylinders into position to supply chlorination equipment while following applicable safety procedures.
  • Moves 155 lb. hydrofluosilicic acid drums, unloading contents into day tank while utilizing proper personal protective equipment.
  • Performs routine security checks of buildings and property on a regular basis.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES. This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

PLANT OPERATOR HOURS FOR THIS POSITION ARE:

Friday 6am-2pm

Saturday 6am-2pm

Sunday 2pm-10pm

Monday 2pm-10pm

Tuesday 10pm-6am

QUALIFICATIONS. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS, KNOWLEDGE and/or EXPERIENCE. One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS. State certification recommended but not required. IDEM Pf is appropriate for LaPorte operation.
