The City of La Porte Park and Recreation Department is hiring for the position of Seasonal Sports Coordinator.  

                                                                            Salary $15.00 - $16.50 per hour

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION

To administer and oversee the operation of all sports programming.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF POSITION

Include the following.

  • Supervises daily operations of sports programs.
  • Develops leagues for team competition.
  • Collaborate with the Recreation Director to develop new sports activities.
  • Develops league schedules for teams.
  • Reschedules all make-up games due to rain or cancellations.
  • Plans, develops, and oversees all tournament and play-off play.
  • Perform work on weekends and/or evenings as needed to meet deadlines or scheduling needs.
  • Oversees and supervises special events such as picture day, fundraisers, and all-star games.
  • Works in cooperation with Park and Recreation staff in the overall operation of sports programs.
  • Recruits, assigns, evaluates, and supervises umpire/referee staff.
  • Recruits, assigns, trains, evaluates, and supervises volunteers.
  • Keeps an accounting of games worked by staff for payroll purposes (to be submitted to the Park and Recreation Department).
  • Complete any accident/incident form and turn into the Park Office with 24 hours of the incident.
  • Conducts coach’s meetings as needed.
  • Makes recommendations to the Park and Recreation Director as needed regarding the operation of programs.
  • Maintaining safety and administering basic first aid.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 21 years of age or have approval of the Recreation Director.
  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE) and/or college focus in recreation, elementary education, physical fitness, or a related field.
  • Experience in baseball/softball would be beneficial.
  • Maintain First Aid & CPR Certifications

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directly supervises 25-30 employees in programs. Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include training staff and volunteers, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to draft routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to understand, conduct, give oral and written instructions and follow posted schedules.

  • Work is typically performed standing, bending, stooping, reaching, walking, sitting, and lifting supplies and equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
