Lakeside Sanitary Sewer Relocation Project

UPDATE January 16th, 2017

If you missed to January 12th meeting, a copy of the presentation is available here.
Additionally, a copy of the required Easement paperwork can be located here.
It was discussed that stakes that represent the proposed locations of the new grinder pump stations will start appearing in yards within the next few months.  This page will be updated when that process begins.

UPDATE January 3rd, 2017

The Wastewater Department of the City of La Porte is planning to relocate the sanitary sewer in the 100-500 blocks of Lakeside Street.  The project is schedule to be bid this winter and constructed in the spring/summer of 2017.
Addresses that will be affected by the project are:

  • 109 to 525 Lakeside Street
  • 201 to 326 Waverly Road
  • 304 Orchard Bluff
  • 305 to 410 Closser Ave

The existing sanitary in this area was installed during very low lake levels in the 1950's.  With normal lake levels, the sewer is under the lake in certain areas.  A failure of the almost 60 year-old  sewer would be very difficult to repair and could result in the release of sewage into Pine Lake.   A failure might also result in an extended loss of sewer service for customers on the line.

A public meeting to discuss the project is scheduled for January 12th at 6:30 pm in the Pompeii room at T-Bones (1110 Lakeside Street).

Some of the topics to be discussed during the meeting will be:

1) Existing Situation

  • Sewer is almost 60 years old
  • Very difficult to repair
  • Could release sewage to lake
  • Very difficult to make new connections
  • There are many septic systems on lots located on the lakeshore

 2) Options Considered

  • Lining sewer to extend life
  • Replace with gravity sewer in yards
  • A Vacuum operated sewer
  • Grinder pumps

 3) Proposed Solution

  • Grinder pump at each lot
  • Low pressure sewers in yards and under streets
An announcement letter was sent to residents who live within the project area.  If you did not receive the announcement, you can click HERE to view the letter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Additionally there are a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) available on the right that may answer some of the concerns you might have .  If you have questions about the project that are not addressed in the FAQ, you can contact the sewage department at 219-362-2354 to get your questions answered.

Due to the need to run sewer lines from the individual homes to the new grinder pump stations, the city will request easements be allowed, first for the installation of the new system, then smaller easements for future maintenance and cleaning of the system.  A copy of the City's easement request form can be found HERE.

Below is an overview of the planned project.
