Get ready to break a sweat, strengthen your body and burn calories while having fun! This class brings a cardiovascular workout using upbeat music and an aerobic step. Includes smooth dances such as Foxtrot and Tango, as well as rhythm dances such as Country Western 2-step, Swing, Salsa, Hustle and Cha Cha. Meet new people, stay active, reduce stress and develop body awareness with this fun class. Go to your next party and actually be able to get up and DANCE! If you are staying on top of fitness trends, you know that barre workouts, which are designed to give you a long, lean dancer-like physique, are all the rage! While all barre workouts differ slightly in structure, most combine elements of ballet, Pilates and yoga. Barre exercises rely mainly upon one’s body weight for resistance and the moves challenge your core stability and balance. Taught by Certified Instructor Becca Masters. Cost is $30 per session. Our five-week session will be held on Wednesdays, September 6th through October 4th from 6-6:50 p.m. in the lower level of the Civic Auditorium (enter at ramp on Plain Street). If you are looking for a fun, creative outlet, try one of our ceramic classes. It provides a great way to get away and meet friends, all while making some unique projects for yourself or gifts for others. We offer pre-registered specialty classes as well as open classes, held in the Ceramics Room at the Civic Auditorium. The fee of the specialty classes varies per project which includes everything necessary to complete the project. The cost is $5 per class during the open classes (October 14 and November 16) plus the cost of greenware. Our specialty classes have been scheduled for October-December. The classes include a Pumpkin Class, Holiday Plate/Mug or a Christmas Tree, and a Kid's Ornament Class. The Comic Book Project ™
The Comic Book Project™ is a world-renowned literacy initiative that has engaged more than 200,000 learners in a creative process leading to academic achievement, social awareness, and community development. By engaging youths in brainstorming, sketching, plotting, designing, and publishing original comic books, CBP encourages students to become active learners and content creators, rather than mere information receivers. Our first workshop is offered to kids 4th-8th grade/ages 9-14. The cost is $100 for 10 sessions (twice a week) on Mondays and Tuesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. beginning September 25. The workshop will be held at Cummings Lodge in Soldiers Memorial Park. At finish, an exhibit celebration will be held at the La Porte County Public Library. Music For Me
Music exploration helps children increase their thinking and language skills, control and strengthen their bodies, become aware of where they are in time and space, follow directions and gain confidence and emotional intelligence. Our Fall 2017 classes are filled with songs about what falls in the Fall! Your child will be making music with instruments as they learn what each instrument is called and discover what fine musicians they are. Along with covering basic music theory, the Music for Me classes promote development in speech, cognition, fine and gross motor, self-help, and social/emotional skills. This developmental music class is for children birth through age 5. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to join in the fun. The tuition for the six-week session is $30. Explore, capture, create. Want to learn the fundamentals of photography? Have questions about your camera? Learn how to shoot photos like a professional from self-taught photographer Larry Noel. Pottery The art of wheel throwing is both a therapeutic and expressive way to create pottery. This class focuses solely on techniques in throwing clay forms on a pottery wheel. During the seven week class, students will learn to apply aesthetics, proper thickness and craftsmanship needed to make functional pottery. You'll be guided by local artist Alayna Bublitz who has a bachelor's degree in Studio Art with a concentration in ceramics. Learn the process of making, decorating and glazing your work. A class for all skill levels. The fee for the program is $65. We offer an adults class (ages 16 and up) on Monday evenings from 6-8 p.m. and Friday evenings from 3-5 p.m. A children's class involving both wheel throwing and handbuilding (ages 10-15) will be held on Thursday evenings from 5:30-7:30 p.m. All classes are held in the Ceramics Room (lower level) of the Civic Auditorium (enter at the ramp door on Plain Street). Learn the art of stained glass, including all of the techniques involved in this beautiful experience. Class sizes are small to ensure individual instruction. The three-week class is held from 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays at Cummings Lodge. Cost is $29 plus $75 for supplies and tools (except glass). Pre-registration is required. Yoga can help soothe the mind and lower stress levels by focusing the mind on the moment and movements rather than on external distractions. Yoga combines flexibility, strength training and balance to create a mind and body activity that’s a perfect addition to any fitness regimen.
