Keeping baseball fun — especially in the early stages of youth participation — is the primary concern of our program. We believe in participation for all, positive competition and building character. We teach fundamentals and traditions of the game, champion sportsmanship and encourage family and community support.

Fall Baseball (For Boys, Ages 8-11) Our
Fall Baseball program, divided into Major (ages 10-11) and Minor (ages
8-9) divisions, prepares players for the next season. Our emphasis will
be on instruction and constructive competition as players look to take
their games to the next level. Registration begins Tuesday, July 5, at
the Park Office. Program includes three weeks of preseason practices followed by eight-game schedule and single-elimination tournament. League practices begin Aug. 1, games run late-August through beginning of October. Flyer
Cal Ripken Rookie (Machine Pitch) Baseball (For Boys, Ages 7-8)
Program makes use of pitching machine to allow for more hittable balls and more action in the field. League will instruct players in fundamentals of the game, including throwing, catching, fielding and hitting. Program includes five weeks of preseason practices followed by 10-game schedule and single-elimination tournament. Rally Day will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the Civic Auditorium. League practices begin April 18, games run late-May through beginning of July.
Cal Ripken Minor Baseball (For Boys, Ages 9-10)
Players build and refine their fundamental skills while beginning to understand game strategy and teamwork. Players pitch, with limitations on stealing and lead-offs. Program includes six weeks of preseason practices followed by 12-game schedule and single-elimination tournament. Rally Day will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Civic Auditorium. League practices begin March 28, games run early-May through beginning of July.
Cal Ripken Major Baseball (For Boys, Ages 11-12)
Featuring 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot base paths, players expand their games and continue building-block approach to fundamentals. Program includes six weeks of preseason practices followed by 12-game schedule, single-elimination tournament and Walt Thode Baseball Classic. Rally Day will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Civic Auditorium. League practices begin March 28, games run early-May through beginning of July.
All participants are encouraged to attend the preseason clinics scheduled for Saturdays, Feb. 27 and March 5 and 12, at the La Porte High School field house. The clinics will feature instruction in the fundamentals and allow players to knock off the "rust" from the winter. The clinics run from 8-8:50 a.m. for Rookie (ages 7-8), from 9-9:50 a.m. for Minor (ages 9-10) and from 10-10:50 a.m. for Major (ages 11-12).
The program offers Tournament Teams for 12U, 11U, 10U and 9U divisions (depending upon the number of players interested, age groups may be combined). Teams participate in six or more tournaments from April through July, including Cal Ripken State Tournament. Only participants in the La Porte Park and Recreation Department Cal Ripken program are eligible for the Tournament Teams and must play for their age group as determined by their age on or before April 30, 2016.
Workouts for any players interested in travel will be held Saturdays, Jan. 16 and 30 and Feb. 13, at the Civic Auditorium (9U/10U from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and 11U/12U from 12:15-1:30 p.m.). Team selections will be made in late February/early March. Teams will be selected by the Tournament Team coaching staff, with oversight from league administrators and coaches. There is no fee for the workouts, however, if selected players must pay an additional fee and possibly participate in fundraising (the fee for 2015 was $175).
A Tournament Team will be selected in May for the 8U age group to represent the league in the Cal Ripken State Tournament in July.
