Background Information
The City of La Porte was founded in 1830 in northwest Indiana.The La Porte Police Department was founded as a metropolitan police department in 1910.
  
Today, the La Porte Police Department's 43 sworn and six civilian support personnel serve a jurisdiction encompassing 12.2 square miles. According to the 2010 census figures, La Porte has 22,053 residents, 8,962 households and 5,362 families within its boundaries.

Reporting a Crime
To report a crime in progress, a traffic crash or some other emergency situation dial 911. The La Porte Police Department is dispatched by the La Porte County E911 Communications Center.

The police station is open daily from 8:00 AM through 9:45 PM Monday through Friday, but is closed on weekends and holidays. During the time that the police station is open all non-emergency situations may be reported by calling 219-362-9446. During times when the police department is closed, non-emergency situations may be reported by calling  219-362-6205. Citizens may also report any type of situation by coming to the police station and using the call box in the front lobby to contact the 911 Center.
