Welcome to La Porte, or as I like to call it, the Hub of Awesome! La Porte has a rich history in manufacturing, health care and innovation drawing back to our first beginnings as an incorporated city. We boast the founding of the Advance-Rumely oil pull tractor which revolutionized agricultural practices at the turn of the century and would later become the world-renowned manufacturer, Allis-Chalmers. We are the birthplace of the creators of the Mayo Clinic, the inventor of orthodontic braces and the record-holder for the most high school baseball state championships in Indiana. We are a community strongly rooted in a diverse array of manufacturing industries from cutting edge aerospace engine castings, household product packaging to candy sold in movie theaters across America.
I couldn’t be prouder to call La Porte home for so many reasons. The people I’ve grown up with or met throughout my life here are some of the hardest working, kindest, generous and most genuine people on earth. They are the heart of this community and make it the kind of place where you want to raise your family. The beautiful scenery composed of our lakes and thirteen public parks throughout the city are almost icing on the cake as we all enjoy lazy summer afternoons on the beaches of Stone and Pine Lakes, carousing in leaf piles from the hundreds of colorful Maple trees in the fall, rousing ice fishing and snowman making competitions in the winter and the blossom of peonies, tulips and daisies all over town in the spring.
I’ve had the honor of serving this city as Mayor since January 2012 and in my first State of the City address outlined that to continue building on the solid foundation of success that La Porte currently boasts, there are three key areas to focus on:
building the most conducive climate for economic development growth,
providing for sustainable infrastructure needs and
fostering a community dedication toward positive lifestyle choices.
Please click on any of the above topics to see what’s happening in all of these areas. The challenge for all of us in this Administration will be to keep you as up to date as possible and the enjoyable challenge for each of you will be to help us continue our successes by engaging in your government. How should you engage? It can be as simple or complex as you desire: simply help us spread the word as we reach goals and milestones, offer positive suggestions on how we can serve you better or get involved in volunteering with local organizations.
Great things are happening in our city, and even more exciting – great things are yet to come because we have the resources, talent and a plan to progress. When I took office in January I asked that each of us, as citizens, challenge ourselves in every aspect of our lives by constantly striving for excellence and to individually ask ourselves how we could contribute to our collective excellence. I am so proud to be a part of a community team that has accepted those challenges in every way - and because we will not accept anything less than excellence, we continue to work harder and push farther. God Bless you and may God bless the City of La Porte.
